Shrek Kin

Shrek Kin

My favourite villain who looks like a hum sup lo. And boy, he can fight. He can undress you with his eyes and then undress you physically after he knocked you down. May you rest in peace.

Shek Wing-cheung (1 January 1913 – 3 June 2009), better known by his stage name Shih Kien (Cantonese: Shek Kin; Mandarin: Shi Jian), was a Hong Kong-based Chinese actor. Shih is best known for playing antagonists and villains in several early Hong Kong wuxia and martial arts films that dated back to the black-and-white period, and is most familiar to Western audiences for his portrayal of the primary villain, Han, in the 1973 martial arts film Enter the Dragon, which starred Bruce Lee. (Source: wikipedia)

PCEB (Penang Convention Exhibition Bureau) logo

by See Lok on December 20, 2017, no comments

Penang Convention Exhibit Bureau logo

PCEB (Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau) is an agency that deals with M.I.C.E (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions). I was tasked to develop a corporate logo for the agency. Looking at many things that represents Penang for inspiration, KOMTAR came to mind (No other building actually). Inside KOMTAR, I chose the Dewan Tunku (Geodesic Dome) instead as the textural reference. Taking a cue from the dome, the hexagon slowly breaks apart and a new form was created. While the actual logo is above, the logo development is shown below:

Between 2015 and 2017

by See Lok on December 20, 2017, no comments

It has been a long since I last update my site. Ever since I moved to Penang in March 2015, it has been both enjoyable and miserable. You get to eat the good food and you also get to sample the bad food. Traffic is not that bad unless it rains nonstop for a few hours and the whole city will be knee deep in water. Being a stranger in a strange land, it took me a while to get used to the island life. It is now 2017 and I m ready to head back Kuala Lumpur to start a new chapter in life.

But before that, here is a list of food I’d like to share (this is my personal “To Eat in Penang” list, not a paid post.)

Oh Lay Ee Hokkien Mee
Stumbled upon this gem when I was cycling to work one morning. I only saw the locals eating there, so this must be good. Indeed it is. They are still using charcoal to keep the soup piping hot. Here’s the location. You can opt for extra stuff like pig intestines, pork ribs and other goodies. Ask for “cham loh”, means you will be getting the flavourful black gooey stuff in your soup.

Keli Set at Esplanade Food Court
For lunch, you cannot miss this keli set. I have tried their chicken set, bawal set, but keli is still my favourite. The onion sambal here is the rice thief. The keli flesh is so soft, the fried fins are so crunchy. Here’s the location. It can be hot during lunch time, be sure to drink plenty of water.

113 Duck Meat Kuey Teow Th’ng
Of all the Kuey Teow Th’ngs I have had over the years in Penang, this one keeps me up and running in the morning. They serve duck rice in the afternoon. It can be crowded during holidays. The location is here. If you are a first timer, then you won’t know what is good until you hit around 30 different bowls of Kuey Teow Th’ng all around Penang. Trust me, I have eaten more than that.

Boey Chong Kee
I only had it twice, because of the queuing time. It can take as long as forty minutes to one hour. I even asked them to cook extra one portion for me of what they are currently cooking, but no. During weekends, when I thought I was the first to be there (they opened at 6pm), people were already sitting there at 5.30pm. Honestly, it is well worth a try, the dishes here are simply delicious. Here’s the location. It is nestled within a cluster of old flats called the People’s Court. Retro to the max. Take a stroll in the flats and you will be “charmed”.

Merican Nasi Kandar
An old school coffee shop with a small humble stall selling nasi kandar with their own version of chutneys.  From Monday to Saturday, they offer different types of rice everyday, except Sunday. Here is the location. It is right opposite St George’s Church, you won’t miss it.

Toe Sabers

Toe Sabers. Star Wars at its best. Light Sabers.

I know what you are thinking. WTF???
Well, I was toying with the idea of using light sabers as toe spacers in a pedicure session. The result was quite unexpected. It is so badass looking. The light sabers (from left): Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Qui-Gon Jinn.

It’s in the Blood

by See Lok on January 31, 2015, no comments

Blood. Dahon Speed P8. Illustration. Pencil. Art. Pen. Riding.

This piece was inspired by a fall I had while cycling at Putrajaya. The fall was so bad that I had to stop cycling for almost a year, I hurt my shoulder, took me 6 months of acu-fucking-puncture to fix and it doesn’t heal completely. I developed the fear of cycling after the fall. It took me a while to get back to cycling again. Beware of wet spots fellow cyclists. It may look you can ride through it. This drawing caught Little Word Studio‘s attention. And we collaborate (me=art, she=words) on Hero’s Watchtower.

Collaboration with Little Word Studio.

Few weeks ago, my artwork was featured here. It was a collaboration with Little Word Studio. We begin by selecting which illustration can inspire her to write a story. This illustration sparked a little story of Hero and Leander in the Greek Mythology. It was a perfect pairing of words and image. It was fun.

E&O Penang Book

by See Lok on January 4, 2015, no comments

E&O Book about Penang travel and holiday destination

This book was designed to be given away when you booked a stay with Eastern & Oriental Hotel. A bold strategic move to market Penang as a holiday destination, a nice hotel to stay and pleasant idea to spend the rest of your life here (in Seri Tanjung Pinang of course!).

Seri Tanjung Pinang is the largest masterplanned seafront development in Penang’s history. With its showcase of luxury residential enclaves and vibrant retail promenades, it is already being hailed as Penang’s new ‘Millionaire’s Row’ and is poised to create a unique lifestyle for those who dream of a holiday by the sea, but love even more, the reality of living there.

This project was done at Boomslang Design.

S P Setia Corporate Ad

by See Lok on January 3, 2015, no comments

S P Setia Corporate Ad, Advertisement, Reader's Digest cover

This exercise is to inform people S P Setia is in 7 countries (Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, Singapore, China, Indonesia, China, United Kingdom) with their premium developments. The creative buy was the Reader’s Digest cover and one inside advertisement. Rainbow was the platform chosen to bring out the message across 7 countries. The inside advertisement shows what S P Setia is capable of developing. The idea was using a bracket which highlights the projects that S P Setia has developed across 7 countries. The direction was simple and classy with dark background. The whole advertisement brings out the message with confidence.

S P Setia Festive Cards

by See Lok on December 27, 2014, no comments

S P Setia Corporate Greetings (Chinese New Year)

S P Setia greeting cards won many hearts of the residents in Setia Alam and abroad. This series was created by introducing a simple line that unites the message and the image. Simple yet classy. The direction was to move away from the normal cultural reference that has been done for years. This card is a two-fold zigzag, the message is divided into 3 parts: Gong Xi Fa Cai on cover, greetings in the middle and the cultural reference with S P Setia as a sign off.

This project was done at Boomslang Design.

Maybank Stories For Our Future: A collection of Tales for the Children of Malaysia

The year was 2010. I didn’t see this project coming. My client came back with 4 scripts and they were as excited as me, to do a storybook! The four stories are : 1 Tree, 1 Raindrop, 1 Bowl of ABC and 1 Lamp (based on our nation slogan-1 Malaysia). 1 Tree and 1 Bowl of ABC were based from TV commercials. It was fun illustrating 1 Raindrop and collaborate with another designer/illustrator on 1 Lamp and the entire process of creating this storybook. The reason this book was created is to pass the values we possess to our children. There is a story telling contest being held here.

You can read the stories here (6.7MB).

Guan Yu

by See Lok on December 24, 2014, no comments

Guan Yu on Fixed Gear, Why Not?

As one of the best known Chinese historical figures throughout East Asia, Guan’s true life stories have largely given way to fictionalised ones, most of which are found in the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms or passed down the generations, in which his deeds and moral qualities have been lionised. Guan is respected as an epitome of loyalty and righteousness. (source: wikipedia)

After Lü Bu‘s death, the Red Hare (war horse) came into Cao Cao‘s possession and he gave it to Guan Yu later.

This is my take on Guan Yu in a fixed gear bike. I believe Guan Yu still look pretty bad ass with the bicycle and his Green Dragon Crescent Blade. R.E.S.P.E.C.T

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

A series of snowflakes designed with guns and swords because guns and swords don’t kill people, people kill people. Smoking kills people too.
Have a good break and welcome the new year with new resolutions.

P.S. Don’t try to quit smoking next year, do it now. Here’s how.

McCann Erickson Knowledge Quarterly (Print)

McCann Knowledge Quarterly, an in-house magazine

Back in my McCann days, my boss told me that I need to take up an in-house magazine which is published quarterly every year. Two of my close friends/ex colleagues have done it before. One ended up quite badly with the boss and the other one was illustrating each and every page of the book and I thought this may be the passage of rite that I have to go through. But it turned out to be a really fun project. As usual being me, I like things black and simple. What I like about this magazine is the essence of it. No distracting images, only pure typography love.

P.S. The only thing that is in color is the third dot from the right on the cover.

HSBC Chinese New Year promotional pack (Print)

HSBC Chinese New Year Direct Mailer

The brief was to align their “approved” design of their CNY festive wulou to a promotional pack to entice customers to spend more. Given an opportunity to lead the design, I developed a contemporary version of mountain and streams that leads into the wulou. The pack has four flaps to hold the vouchers inside. The opening mechanism is here.

Association Of Accredited Advertising Agents of Malaysia

During my stint at McCann Erickson in 2007, I had the privilege to work on the Kancil Awards (more about the show here). I worked with another art director on this project using the building block similar to Lego as the trophy. The more you win, the more your block will stack. We recreated the logo and the certificates for the show too.

MAS Reduced Air Fare (Print Campaign)

by See Lok on December 11, 2014, no comments

Malaysia Airlines cheap travel fare campaign

Had fun with this campaign. We had an idea to shout to the consumers with the reduced air fare but without reducing our creativity in it.

For example, you will read Students 50% less in a glance, but you get to read more between the lines. The campaign didn’t take off as Airasia was definitely much cheaper then. This campaign was created during my stint at Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur in 2006.
